An Army of Ducks

AN ARMY OF DUCKS is a humorous picture book about one boy who discovers that feeding a duck can have some very unexpected consequences.
It starts with a single unwanted sandwich crust tossed to a hungry duck at the park. Then another duck arrives. And another. Before long, twenty waddling, quacking ducks are following the boy all the way home. By the next morning, their numbers have doubled, and his growing feathered army follows him straight to school.
At first, having a classroom full of ducks is hilarious. But when lunchtime arrives and the sandwich crusts run out, the hungry flock turns the cafeteria into chaos, tearing through lunchboxes and gobbling up anything they can find. When the boy shouts for them to stop and every duck obeys, he makes a startling discovery: somehow, he has become their leader.
Now it’s up to him to solve the problem he accidentally created. With a cardboard box, a school full of leftover crusts, and a little ingenuity, he finds a way to lead his army back where they belong and make sure they never go hungry again.

One sunny afternoon, a boy went to the park with a peanut butter sandwich.
He didn’t like the crusts on his bread, so he pinched off a piece and tossed it on the ground.
Waddle, waddle.
A little duck hurried over and gobbled it up.
The boy laughed. “That was funny!”
So he threw another piece.
Quack! Another duck joined in. Now there were two.
The boy stood and looked around. A third duck was heading his way.
He tossed it a crust, too.
When he started walking down the path, the ducks followed close behind.
Every few steps, he dropped a piece of crust (the part he didn’t like).
By the time he reached the street, twenty ducks were marching after him!
They followed him all the way home.
The boy darted inside and shut the door quickly. He didn’t let the ducks in. He knew his mom would not be happy.
The next morning, the boy peeked outside.
“Oh no,” he whispered. Twice as many ducks were waiting for him!
